Last winter was especially hard, not just for me, but for many others who experienced the harsh weather. The cold temperatures, endless snow, and extra days off from school left me feeling a bit of the seasonal blues. To be blunt, I thought I might lose my mind!
I live in an area where we enjoy the outdoors and salt water all summer, and though I am extremely grateful for this, I believe that it’s starting to make the winters a little more difficult because I know what I’m missing! I have tried to find the beauty in the cold, and at times I truly…but I seem to only be able to for a few moments before I remember that I’m freezing. And stuck inside with 3 children, 2 dogs, and 2 cats.
So in January, I realized that I just felt stuck. I had no where to go to get away, unless I wanted to suit up in 40 layers of clothing, and head out into the dreary cold by myself. I tried to think about creating a space in my house where I could sneak away every once in a while, but our home space is very open ~ there are no corners or rooms that are out of the way that would work.
Until I remembered the closet, that we never use, at the top of the stairs… My husband obliged when I asked if I could clean it out and create a thinking space ~ which might have been an indication that he was losing his mind as well, but instead of asking twice, I took advantage of the moment!
Here it is…the closet at the top of the stairs.
It’s not quite a “Monica Closet“, but it was definitely full of unused items and rarely opened. (and if you watched “Friends”, you know what I mean!
So it didn’t take long to clean it out…
Next, since it was a snow day and my children were out of school, again, I took them to Lowe’s and we chose a paint color. I wanted them to be part of the process because I want them to use the room as well, as being still and managing stress will come in handy in the years to come!
We chose “Dive In”, which is a Valspar Signature Color ~ which honestly seemed perfect on this cold day. We purchased a gallon (which was way too much), a few paint brushes, and came back home. It only took an hour to paint the entire closet, and that was with 2 coats.
We let it dry for a day, added a small throw carpet, some hooks from the World Market, a few canvas paintings, and a pillow and we love it!
I have to say that now that the project is complete, I absolutely love having this space! I use it for a secret place to clear my head, to do a guided meditation, or there is even space for me to lie in the legs-up-the-wall pose, which is a great way to get immediate relaxation. I love these specific meditations by Bodhipaksa, and Lori Harder has a few that are coming soon to her new website! .
